L .S. Lowry

L.S Lowry Prints:
A Walk In The Past
On Now

Born 1887 in Stretford, LS Lowry would spend his life in the north west of England, with much of his painting documenting the industrial landscapes of the area. Developing a highly distinctive style, his work is defined by the recurring use of ‘matchstick’ men and a sparse use of colour. Indeed, the artist’s palette rarely stretched beyond the same five tones. Despite gaining widespread popularity during his lifetime the artist had an ambiguous relationship with success. At once embracing the opportunities it offered whilst also consciously presenting himself as a man of simple tastes; ambivalent to the widespread accolades. This is attested to in the artist’s unique record of rejecting five British honours. Dying in 1976, Lowry‘s popularity has continued to rise, and in 2013 he was honoured with a major retrospective at Tate Britain.
